In this edition of the Mayor’s Corner, Mayor Reardon begins with a re-cap of the Forever Green Campaign that concluded last weekend with a flurry of activities in and around the city. Mayor Reardon reminds us of Clean Sweep, a volunteer effort to clean up Newburyport’s 26 parks. It begins on Saturday, April 27th @ 9 a.m. in Cashman Park. In honor of Arbor Day, the Friends of Newburyport Trees (FoNT) will be planting trees along the Rail Trail on Saturday. Mayor Reardon offers updates on some of the City’s major projects underway. The City has issued a call for artists, a public art opportunity for a sculpture for the Market Landing Park Expansion. The deadline for artist submissions is May 9, 2024 @ 4 p.m. Please see the city’s website for more information. Mayor Reardon updates us on Port Rec at 59 Low Street. The Newburyport Literary Festival, run by Vicki Hendrickson, takes place this weekend and opens Friday night at the Firehouse Center for the Arts by honoring local authors and historians. There will be activities throughout the weekend. On Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall Auditorium, the City of Newburyport will hold its annual Boards, Commissions & Volunteer Fair. Attendees will be able to “shop” the City’s all-volunteer Boards and Commissions and look for opportunities to volunteer. Mayor Reardon attended Opportuni-TEA at the Mission Oak Grill to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Opportunity Works and their 20 years of partnership with the Newburyport Art Association through the OpArt Program. You can join OpArt artists from Opportunity Works for an artist reception and celebration on Thursday, May 2nd from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Newburyport Art Gallery, 65 Water Street. Finally, Matilda the Musical is coming to the Nock Middle School from May 2nd – 4th.
