The City of Newburyport reports that a City-owned vehicle was involved in a collision with a bicyclist on Tuesday morning.
At about 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, the driver of a Council on Aging van was turning left from High Street into the Senior Community Center driveway. The van collided with a 15-year-old girl on a bicycle who had been riding westbound on the south side of High Street against traffic.
The Newburyport Police and Fire Department responded to the scene. The cyclist was treated for minor injuries at the scene, then transported to Anna Jaques Hospital for further evaluation.
The accident report by Newburyport Police resulted in a warning for the driver, who is a City employee. The City will be following up with the employee regarding disciplinary action through the Human Resources Department, in a manner consistent with City policies and procedures.
As this is a personnel matter, the City will have no further comment at this time.
