In this edition of the Mayor’s Corner, Mayor Reardon updates us on the Whittier Building Project. Plans for a task force made of district leaders to update the regional agreement are underway. The Whittier School Committee met on Tuesday night and voted unanimously to remove the SOI from the MSBA. Applications are still open for the Whittier School Committee Representative from Newburyport. The City Council cleared the way for building four multifamily units on the former Mobil gas station site after voting on Monday to rezone the corner of State and High Streets. Mayor Reardon’s State of the City will be held on Wednesday, February 28th @ 7 p.m. in the City Hall Auditorium. Lt. Gov Kim Driscoll and Mayor Reardon will speak, followed by the Mayor’s Public and Community Service Awards. All are invited to attend. The order for the new Newburyport Rec Center at 59 Low Street was presented to the City Council on Monday evening. The order will go in front of the Community Service Committee on March 4th. The Newburyport school district recently took the first steps in obtaining financial aid from the state for the repair of the roofs at Nock Middle School and Newburyport High School. City officials began inspections this week on Short Term Rental Units (STRU) as a part of the Licensing process. These Licenses are now required for STRUs, like those offered on Airbnb and VRBO. The Newburyport High School Investment Club won a stock market competition. The club is supported and sponsored by the Newburyport Education Foundation. Finally, the Friends of the Newburyport Public Library is holding a Kids’ Used Book Sale and Magic Show on Saturday, February 17th. The magic show is at 1:30 and the Used Book Sale is from 2:00-3:00 pm.
