This episode of the Mayor’s Corner is coming to you from the Plum Island Lighthouse. The Mayor gives a Memorial Day weekend recap which includes the search for Pepper the dog, former Mayor Byron Matthews Memorial at the Custom House Maritime Museum and ending with the city’s Memorial Day Ceremony at City Hall. The Mayor recognizes the NHS Girls Varsity Track team for their Division 4 State Championship. Hailey LaRosa was the 2 mile state champ and the 4×400 relay team also became state champions. NHS Varsity Baseball win the Spofford Tournament and former Clipper Molly Laliberty, starting goalie for the Northwestern Lacrosse Team won the Division 1 National Championship over Boston College.
This week the West End Fire Station is officially closed with demolition and construction beginning mid-June.
The Mayor is asking everyone to wear orange on Friday for National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The City will have a short ceremony at City Hall 10am with a list of speakers and a proclamation will be read.
The Pride Flag will be raised at City Hall at 4pm on Friday in a short ceremony. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey will be in attendance to help us kick off a big Pride Weekend in the Port. Saturday at 12pm will be the City’s first Pride Parade that will start at Bartlet Mall, proceed down Green Street, and finish at the Waterfront.
Spring Fest is also going on downtown this weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 12-5 put on by the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce. The Newburyport Chamber moved into their new home on Inn Street in the old Phoenix Room.
It’s Senior Week in Newburyport. Congratulations to the NHS Class of 2023 the 155th graduation class of Newburyport High School. Senior Car Parade on Saturday 930am and Graduation 11am on Sunday.
