Additional Information:
The City of Newburyport is supporting the Greater Newburyport Green Expo on Thursday, April 11 from 4-8 PM, at the Rupert A Nock Middle School, 70 Low Street, Newburyport, MA. Admission is free.
The purpose is to engage citizens, parents, students, elected officials, businesses and non-profit groups in a dialogue on how our community can come together to address today’s important issues on jobs, training, energy use, waste, and resiliency as we confront climate change.
The event introduces attendees to local and state initiatives and offers solutions to concerns. Mayor Holaday will give the keynote address. Speaking on “Net Zero Newburyport: Putting the City on a Path Toward Zero Waste and Carbon Neutrality,” she says, “The Green Expo is an opportunity for us to come together with a common purpose and concern as people who are interested in finding solutions to climate change and protecting our environment.”
Exhibitions, speakers, and school presentations will provide a kaleidoscope of activities that present opportunities and an engaging dialogue. The important take away, according to event chair Bill Clary is that each person attending will have an opportunity to learn how to think globally, work locally and act personally. Massachusetts State Senator Diane DiZoglio and Representative Kelcourse will make opening remarks. Senator DiZoglio said, “Occasions that bring community stakeholders together to collaborate on protecting the environment and encouraging sustainable practices are essential as we work toward a sustainable future, here in Massachusetts and beyond.”
Attendees will be able to see, hear, feel, smell and taste the future green economy through the exhibits, speakers, and presentations that cover topics ranging from local food production, recycling, waste-to-energy, composting, sustainable and renewable packaging, consumer goods repair, green energy production, home and building energy efficiency, renewable energy, nonfossil fuel transportation, resilient infrastructure, and mass transit. Thoughts on some important issues will be offered in 15-minute ‘QuickTalks.’ Here you’ll learn what Newburyport’s action plans and goals are for its energy, energy efficiency, resiliency, and waste concerns. You’ll also hear how to start and run a net zero business and how to reduce your carbon footprint. To round things out, you’ll learn all about carbon free home energy systems, community solar, green roofs, heat pumps, bike lanes & sidewalks, and offshore wind.
Exhibition highlights include a display of electric cars and The Repair Café, staffed by more than 20 experienced Repairers. Visitors may bring a small, clean item in need of a free repair. Food is
